Unrequited
by Emma Grey
Release Date: 05/26/14

Summary from Goodreads:
Seventeen-year-old Kat Hartland loathes Unrequited, the world's biggest boy band. Is she the only girl in Sydney who can't be bothered with perfect-looking Angus Marsden?

Give her 5 Seconds of Summer. Now.

Or maybe the seriously-hot med student who rescued her on a train—and who could be Douglas Booth's twin! Perfect formal partner, much?

But when Kat comes face to face with Angus Marsden himself, things start to get complicated. Very. Throw in a deranged female popstar, final exams, a part in the musical and a mum who just doesn't get it—and where is her best friend?

When did life get so crazy? Kat's just an ordinary schoolgirl.

Isn't she?

My Review

Unrequited is a wonderful YA contemporary that I enjoyed from the very first page to the very last. It's funny, authentic, romantic, and just about everything else readers can look for. It's a pretty quick read that's nearly impossible to put down, so I would just clear out an evening to read. You definitely won't regret it.

One of the things I loved the most in the novel was the "small world" feel that it gave. So many of the characters have intertwined stories, whether or not it be through coincidence. Although too many coincidences can seem doubtful, novels like this are probably much more true to life than a story in which all of the characters have completely separate lives. I loved the different interactions and parallels, especially in the cases of dramatic irony. Plus, the ongoing concept of "chance" meetings makes for a great plot. It's a blast to read.

Just as much, Kat is a very likeable protagonist. She sounds and acts like a seventeen year old girl. (And that's coming from a seventeen year old girl, so I think I have some weight when I say it.) She has a lot of personality, which gives her an interesting voice. Although she can act mature for her age, this maturity isn't overdone. She still gets nervous around boys, even if she can bicker with them and she still care about things like her school's formal, although it isn't her ultimate priority.

Angus Marsden is a lead who's an equal match for Kat. He's sweet, talented, funny...although at sometimes he seems a bit too perfect, that's part of the celebrity image, and he really is an interesting character. I'm not a fan of any boy bands at the moment, but I must say, I'd probably be a hard core closet fan of Unrequited.

With witty dialogue, a fast pace, and a thoroughly enjoyable romance, I highly recommend giving Unrequited a try. It's the kind of concept that brings to life a fantasy of every teenage girl (if they disagree, they're probably lying) through a fully enjoyable story. An overall fabulous read.
